Driving in Saudi — what licence, who can rent, and the rules nobody tells tourists

Saudi Arabia removed its ban on women driving in 2018. Today, women drive everywhere — but for tourists the rules are subtle: IDP requirements, licence transliteration, and rental company policies that vary by branch.

Can you drive?

Saudi road rules that surprise tourists

Speed limits

120 km/h highway, 80 km/h city. Speed cameras are everywhere. SAR 300 minimum fine for 1st offense.

No alcohol tolerance

Any trace of alcohol in blood = immediate arrest. Saudi Arabia's alcohol laws apply to all drivers.

Road accidents

Saudi Arabia has high accident rates. Avoid driving 18:00–22:00 on weekends if possible.

AC is essential

Some rental cars have weak AC. Test before leaving the lot.

Fuel is cheap

SAR 2.18/litre (Oct 2026). Long drives cost less than you expect.

No U-turns at traffic lights

Use designated U-turn lanes (often 200–500 m down the road).

How to read

Limitations

• Rental policies vary by branch, even within the same company. Always confirm in writing at pickup.

• Saudi insurance (third-party) is included; comprehensive adds 25–40% to the rental cost.

• Some remote areas have unmarked road closures; verify via Waze or local contact before remote trips.

FAQ

Can I drive with just my UK licence, no IDP?

Some companies accept UK licences directly. But the legal requirement is IDP. Safer to have one.

What's the minimum rental age?

21 for most companies. 25 for premium brands. Under 25 often pays a young-driver surcharge.
