Riyadh Metro — the 6-line network from a tourist's view

The Riyadh Metro opened in late 2024 with 6 colour-coded lines, 85 stations, and 176 km of track — making it one of the largest driverless metro networks in the world. Most tourists don't know which lines connect to which tourist spots, which stations are walkable from which malls, or how the fare works.

Limitations

• Tourists: the metro is mostly useful for connecting downtown hotels, financial district, and Olaya. Airport connectivity limited (Phase 2 extension).

• Riyadh has no public surface tram; bus rapid transit (BRT) is still under construction.

• Many tourist sites (Diriyah, Edge of the World) are far outside the metro network — Careem/Uber for those.

FAQ

Is there a tourist pass?

No specific tourist pass, but single trips are inexpensive. Consider the Riyadh Mobility app for combined metro + bus tickets.

Can I take a suitcase on the metro?

Yes; there's a luggage area at the back of each car. No weight limit (retail within reason).
