Haram Boundary Navigator — what's inside, what's restricted

The Haram is not the same as the city boundary. Makkah's Haram is roughly a 12 km radius from the Kaaba and contains a zone of special rules — non-Muslims are not allowed inside (subject to certain sealed roads) and pilgrims cannot leave without re-entering Ihram if they cross the Miqat boundary. This tool tells you what's actually inside.

Walking time: 30+ min. Shuttle to haram: 10–20 min. Budget friendly (SAR 150–500/night).

      The Tan'im trick for re-entering

If you're staying in Makkah and need to leave for the airport, then re-enter Makkah later (e.g., for another Umrah), the rule of Ihram state still applies if you cross the Miqat. The closest Miqat for Makkah residents and tourists is Tan'im (A'immahmed), about 7 km north of the Haram.

Many pilgrims do this: take Ihram from their hotel, go to Tan'im to renew the niyyah, and return. The route is well-paved and clearly marked; minibuses run for 30 SAR/person. It is not a way to exit Ihram after a previous one (you cannot — once you've cut umrah and exited Ihram, a new Ihram is required for a fresh Umrah).

      Limitations

      • The exact Haram boundary is surveyed and marked with concrete pillars but not on public Google Maps. Local signs and the "Haram boundary" markers are the practical reference.

      • Hotel prices and shuttle availability change seasonally. This tool does not track specific property rates.

      • Non-Muslims: historically prohibited from entering Makkah, with sealed roads at the city boundary. Some airspace exceptions for transit. We do not provide guidance on this rule.

      FAQ

Can I exit Makkah for Jeddah and re-enter?

Yes, but you must have Ihram on and re-enter at Tan'im (or any other Miqat) to renew the intention if you want to perform another Umrah. If you're just visiting Jeddah and not doing another Umrah, no Ihram needed.

      Are cameras allowed inside?

Yes, phones and small cameras are allowed but cannot be used to photograph specific people without consent. Photographing other pilgrims without permission is discourteous.
